Mile 47, in the trees, heading up, Washington State.
Backseat of Mom & Dad’s car. Driving to Uncle Stevie’s 50th Birthday party.
- My parents had a little portable tape player so we could listen to music on the long drives. The tapes never changed for about 10 years.
This is what we listened to:
- Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris
- Waylon and Willie
- A Beatles mixed tape
- Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits
- The Amazing Rhythm Aces
- Hoyt Axton
- Gordon Lightfoot
It became a sort of torture. Especially Gordon Lightfoot. I remember being so happy when the first Walkman tape players came out when I was a freshman in high school. I could finally break free from my simmering anger inspired by being forced to listen to those tapes over and over and over. But now I love them all.
Especially Love Hurts. That was the only song I never got sick of.
