  • My parents had a little portable tape player so we could listen to music on the long drives. The tapes never changed for about 10 years.

This is what we listened to:

  • Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris
  • Waylon and Willie
  • A Beatles mixed tape
  • Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits
  • The Amazing Rhythm Aces
  • Hoyt Axton
  • Gordon Lightfoot

It became a sort of torture. Especially Gordon Lightfoot. I remember being so happy when the first Walkman tape players came out when I was a freshman in high school. I could finally break free from my simmering anger inspired by being forced to listen to those tapes over and over and over. But now I love them all.

Especially Love Hurts. That was the only song I never got sick of.
